but beard hair (how's this for a blatant generality?) is tougher than leg
hair, and should have more wearing effect. if it were corrosion, then time
alone would cause the dulling.

All the nonsense aside, a steel blade (even stainless steel) is much harder
and tougher than any body hair (even women's under arm hair), so how is it
that cutting hair can dull the bade?
