Check out the new issue of Scientific American (October). As Usual,
lots of good stuff, but for me, three stood out: An alternative view
of the implications of the TIMSS test results ("The False Crisis in
Science Education," by W. Wayt Gibbs and Douglas Fox, p. 87); An
offer of free software that simulates some classical stat mech
phenomena, and its available for both Macs and PCs (The Amateur
Scientist--Modeling the Atomic Universe, by Shawn Carlson, p. 118);
and finally, an appropriately irate commentary on the recent
silliness in Kansas ("A Total Eclipse of Reason," by John Rennie, p.
124). Good reads all. I would like to hear the take on the education
article from others on this list.
