Having said that, I've always thought the meter was too long.

The English and Americans had inches and feet, but how did the French measure
length before the revolution?

No way. A meter is the length of your arm, or the length of your pace if
you consciously stretch (like playing Pirate Treasure Maps).
It's a perfect size. What could be more natural?
