The sexagesimal system of numeration only lost out to the decimal
system in very recent times in European culture, historically
speaking, perhaps in the eigteenth century. It is known to have
been used in many cultures, e.g. India and Babylon in more acient
times. Many remnants of the system still remain, including our
method of timekeeping. The Hindu method, while also sexagesimal,
is quite different from ours.
