Ahhh. All is now clear; Leigh and I have different definitions of
"understand". I find it astounding that so many phenomena, even at the
atomic and nuclear level, fit simple pictures that grow out of my everyday
experiences.
But do you "understand" the chaotic behavior of a pendulum on an
oscillating support?

Jack
"I scored the next great triumph for science myself,
to wit, how the milk gets into the cow. Both of us
had marveled over that mystery a long time. We had
followed the cows around for years - that is, in the
daytime - but had never caught them drinking fluid of
that color."
