In the 'NASA' scheme of things, $600,000 is a totally INSIGNIFICANT investment.

Yeah, I should have said "longshot bets with high return", or "high risk,
high reward". It looks to me like chancy proposals tend to draw criticism
and to not be funded, even if they would give enormous returns if they pan
out. But like playing the stock market, once we leave the safe
investments behind, it takes skill to avoid losing everything.
