Re: PHYS-L Needs New Owner and New Home!

Roger Haar wrote:

I have had some very preliminary discussions with our system op about
taking over the PHYS-L list. He is the one who would have to make it work,
but is not the power to approve it. He had several questions:

First to Dick Smith:

1. How many people on the list?

600

2. Average number of messages per day? (My guess is 20 )

5 to 30

3. How is SPAM controlled?

The list is private, allowing posts only from subscribers.

Before I try to sell this to my bosses, I want to check the
fundamental makeup of this list. ( This is useful to know in selling this as
an outreach activity.) My observation from the messages is that the list is
an even mix of college/university people and high school people.

Check the subscription list by sending the following to

If we do take over managing this list, we probably would start with
it as just a mailing list and late add the WEB based archive.

I should mention also that I've had private notes from several others
who are possibly interested in hosting the list. I'm delighted to hear
from Roger in his post that he's also interested. I think we're
developing some options here, and after a little more time I'll try to
lay out the various possibilities so we can see what the best solution
is for phys-l.

To Roger: What's the list serving software you run at Arizona? (It
would be great if it were Revised Listserv, primarily because of the
database capabilities I described in an earlier post.) How many lists
are supported at present? (more is better, since the systems guy would
have more experience.)
