This gives me a chance to complain about two.  One the usual? case that the supervisor writes the paper and submits it.  *exception.

Regarding JD: 

Two:  So the paper on the major part of my disst. was rejected with a detailed reason given.  So John just submitted it to another journal (one that had accepted his previously) and was accepted immediately.  

I wish I coulda contested the reviewer.   


Skip detail:  


We (I) prepared our samples by vacuum deposition in a commercial chamber with a Vac-ion pump.  Sorption for forepump no grease or oil anywhere.  

The metals were heated to out gas over many minutes after the pump had been operating over night and the frame, spectrosil prisms, etc., heated for hours.  I’d hafta consult the disst. for the pressure, but it was definitely Ultra High Vacuum.  I then evaporated the metal at high temperature with a flapper covering the slide and prism then opened it for a few seconds.  Initially the pressure would increase when reduced I’d open the flapper.  After removal I’d coat the metal with vac. grease.  The ellipsometry was at the metal spectrosil surface.  [The boat and the prism were as close as practical.]

The reviewer claimed our pressure was two high as another researcher’s was about one decade lower.  HOWEVER, he made the measurement over a long period of time on the surface exposed to the residual gas.  A measure of the quality of my films is the resistivity of the metals (four terminal) as a function of temperature.  For Gd the Curie point temp.  matched the highest reported in the lit.  {FECO fringes for thickness.)  


Anyway  Ollie Heavens my eternal examiner said I did important good work.  

*  Exception:  Bob Eisberg my sup. for MA had me write it and then he submitted it. I was the only author, but, of course, thanked him for his supervision, etc.
