[Phys-L] Engineering Faculty Position - Freshman Physics Teacher
The Brown U. School of Engineering seeks applications for a Teaching
Faculty position and lecturer rank. The person will teach introductory
physics to freshman engineering students. The class size is typically
around 200 students. There is support staff for the labs, the demos, the
help sessions, and the grading. The track for a successful person will lead
to a permanent senior Lecturer position.
The Brown School of Engineering program is the third-oldest civilian
engineering program in the USA and the oldest undergraduate program in the
Ivy League with a long tradition of materials research, metals research,
and related subjects. It has an extremely successful and large student-run
maker space called the BDW (Brown Design Workshop) and is closely allied
with RISD Design Engineering majors.
The qualifications for the position are moderate given its prominence and
importance to the School of Engineering. The compensation is quite good.
And the future growth potential is great. The cost of living in RI is
comparably high, but there are ways to manage this issue and there is
support for it. We have a good team of experienced and professional
technical and academic staff that support this Faculty position.
Brown is located in the Prov metro area, between NYC and Boston. RI has an
outstanding coastline, bays, and beaches. It has wonderful natural
landscapes, great bike trails, top-notch boating, and special islands.
There are diverse ethnic cultures including beautiful Italian, Portuguese,
Irish, Armenian, Asian, Hispanic and Latino, Native American, Black
American, German, Russian, Jewish, and Cape Verdean neighborhoods. There is
a very long, unique, and twisted English Colonial History. RI has a special
place in the history of American democracy. There are Native American
Ceremonial stone landscape relics from thousands of years of ancient
Indigenous settlement and a Roger Williams National Memorial site.
Brown is a special place. It is not only academically liberal, it is
Utra-Liberal. Its inclusive and diverse campus attracts national and
international students worldwide. If someone is indeed looking to change
and move to do more good work, to do work you have judged is rightly
demanded of you, I hope you will consider applying ASAP.
