For comparison purposes:

57% blockage is equivalent to the middling illumination on Mars,  96% blockage 
is like the corresponding illumination at Jupiter, 99% is like at Saturn, 99.7% 
is like at Uranus, and 99.9% is like at Neptune.

BTW, I got to see the full 4 min of totality on the centerline by commuting to 
Albion, IL (usual pop. under 2000) where there were only scattered cirrus 
clouds, mostly contrails.  Quite spectacular.
