There are many movies that the studios forgot or neglected to renew
copyrights including the classic "It's a Wonderful Life".  As a result many
classic movies have not been released by the original studio because they
have been released by inferior quality 3rd parties, or the studios have
"lost" the original negatives.

So forgetting to renew a copyright is not that unusual.  And just like
publishers, studios release what they think they can sell profitably.
